Where's all that time gone - beauty tip no 1

There used, I'm sure, to be days when there was enough time to think, let alone get up, get dressed, put face on, take dogs out then start work. I find the temptation now is to skip the dogs (which doesn't work) or skip the face (which I can't bear - never seen in daylight without hair and makeup, that's me). So I can tell you, having worked on numerous photo shoots and watched far too many hair and makeup people go about their business, turning dull complexions into bright and making models look soooo much better than they did when they arrived that there are just a few products no grooming conscious girl should be without. So. My favourite product for today and one that unquestionably is one of the best on the market:

Bags on Sale

Thought that today would be the day that I might, just might, go for that glorious red Miu Miu bag I spotted in the sale yesterday and ..............it's gone! Shouldn't have done it anyway - would be difficult to use after September and then next summer green might be the new black again, or is it already, you never can tell.

As someone whose always telling people to buy neutrals in the sale I spotted this one which I have coveted for a month or two and which would be great for any season. Then again - from the runway animal print is going to be HUGE next year so you simply couldn't go wrong there. Will have a think, there are bound to be plenty more to choose from.

Dressing up Rule No 1

Walking around Glyndebourne yesterday afternoon with opera supremo Nick we started playing the 'spot the best/worst dressed' game which made me think - why do people do it? At the risk of sounding just a teeny weeny bit critical, don't they look in the mirror before they go out? I am vertically challenged at 5' 2" and a bit horizontally challenged too so don't tell me that it's easy, it isn't but a modicum of thought will do the trick.

This isn't, believe me, a matter of spending loads of money on clothes or buying into the latest trends. It may be, partly, because some people just don't care - or have convinced themselves that they don't care. My belief is that everyone cares at some level.

My Chilean friend who I went with, who is definitely no taller than me, wore a fantastic slim black and white print coat by Jaeger over a simple M & S linen shift and some 'bring it all together' costume jewellery which just goes to show that you can successfully mix one statement piece with simple, stylish high-street buys and look a million dollars.

Something totally new you won't believe you lived without

On a recent consulting expedition I came across The Camouflage Company with their clever, lightweight, life and mess saving bags, storage boxes, picnic cool bags, bbq covers, garden furniture covers and shopping bags-for-life.

The two lovely ladies who've created this brand and design all the products are clever, fun and interesting - all of which is reflected in their designs. Get hold of them and nag them about their clever new laundry bag - I'm waiting for six to arrive - three cheers for anything that gets rid of clutter and reduces the stress of having large kids around the house who simply cannot put anything away, let alone pick the washing up off the floor.

Camouflage Company - we love everything you do.

Just found on sale

Just found in the Net-a-Porter sale, totally covetable, which leads me to more wise words about sale shopping, and designer sale shopping in particular. You've almost certainly realised by now that all designers, and all brands, size differently. Annoyingly there's no question that one brand's size 12 is another brand's size 10 - so how to sort out the 12s from the 10s when you're about to commit and press that 'buy now' button?

The way to look at it is if you're buying from a mainstream high street 'mature' brand you can be pretty safe in ordering your size. If it's a designer superbrand, or a label aimed at a young market then be very careful. Check the size charts by all means, but remember that close fitting items, such as (non stretchy) shift dresses, neat little jackets and pencil skirts will always be harder to size than jersey pieces (wrap dresses, tops, the lot) knitwear anything slightly trapeze shaped.

The real answer would be to order two sizes and then send one back, but my plastic wouldn't stand the strain and maybe yours won't, so go up a size if in doubt and play it safe.

Having just fallen in love with this dress I'd have to be seriously careful - think I'd be better to order that Marc Jacobs handbag at 40% off. Problems, problems.............

Sale Temptation 1

One of the major problems of the sales, and in particular a problem with writing about them, is that you get to fall in love over and over again. Girls this is true temptation time so don't go browsing unless you've either locked up your plastic or you're ready to buy.

As someone who finds shopping total therapy (over and over again) this is a seriously tough time because the discounts are totally, like, (daughter speak) amazing).

Found this Kenneth Jay Lane bracelet today - have I bought it? Weeell I'll let you know later, maybe.

The rest of the sales at thesiteguide.com - get shopping now.

Something Different - Rules for Designer Sale Shopping

Snap up the best Designer Discounts fast. They don't hang around. You'll find all the best Designer Discounts at thesiteguide.com.

Don't be tempted to order something that you think may be too small. It probably will be and you'll have to send it back and then you'll be annoyed because it didn't fit, maybe a bit depressed and frustrated because you have to pack it up and send it back again when you knew you were stupid to order it in the first place. Buy your size and you're less likely to be disappointed.

Only order something you believe you will love forever - buy the best you can afford and leave the tat for the rest.

When your order arrives, touch, feel and try on without delay - Online Boutiques returns times can be short - after all - they want your returns back quickly for other customers to order and you want your money back so you can shop again soon.

Favourite bag on sale spotted today

This is serious sale time, how can anyone resist with so many bargains around?

The Daily Mail June 19th

Loved this piece in the Mail - wonderful publicity for both the site and my books. Long may it continue.

Well just about everyone's either on sale, going on sale or never came off sale (or some sort of discounting, since Christmas). The designer brand, bargain hunter's paradise is getting right into it's stride but my advice is to hold back at least for a week unless there's something you've really fallen in love with, in which case go for it or you take the risk of it not being there in your size after today.

Having walked - fast - through Selfridges yesterday afternoon I can safely say that I personally think anyone who braves the store sales has nerves of steel. And I don't.

Love this one - but I am going to wait because it's not really my style and so many other things to cherish as the online boutiques reduce their prices further and further.
