To be honest I was very sceptical about this white noise machine designed to cut out background noise. I love a peaceful night’s sleep, I dislike earplugs intensely and sometimes, when you’re in a hotel, or the kids are having a party at home, or someone has a TV show on nearby you can be easily disturbed.
So when I arrived in Half Moon Bay on Labor Day Weekend – don’t say it, daft time to travel – to find the hotel packed with kids, dogs and noisy door slamming I decided to try what they described as a ‘white noise machine’ and when I looked it up I can see it as Dohm Sound Conditioner.
All I can say is that it works, superbly. You get used to the humming noise, rather like that of a fan, incredibly quickly, and you hear nothing outside the room. I can’t vouch for what happens if someone bangs on your door because no one did, I can promise that you won’t hear anything general outside.
There are two levels of sound to choose from and an alternative type of sound, I just used the basic one. I’ve seen that these machines are more readily available in the US, but frankly for anyone who lives anywhere noisy or stays away regularly and has difficulty sleeping you need one of these and you can find them at Amazon in the UK. Thankfully there’s a portable version as well, called the Marpac Rohm and the Marpac Hush version for babies. Mine’s on the way right now.
There are other makes but I can’t vouch for them – and no one has paid me for this review – this is just a brilliant machine.
