I’ve become addicted to my foundation primers because they really do work. They even out your skin tone but primarily they’re best for making your foundation last longer. Forget the days when you used to put your foundation on straight over your moisturiser, no self respecting skincare/cosmetic cupboard is complete without one of these multi tasking essentials.
Of course every brand has their own primer, or more likely a few, and every review you read of ‘the best foundation primers’ will have their favourites - with or without SPF, radiance enhancing, skin tone enhancing, scented and unscented. Being the beauty junky that I am I can vouch for several of these. These are my six favourite foundation primers.
Lancome’s LA BASE is a translucent, non greasy, velvety base which is excellent for wearing under every-day foundation. There are no gimmicks here such as radiance enhancers or SPF, but if you want something to make your foundation last longer and create a very smooth surface this is ideal.
I’ve long been attracted by Charlotte Tilbury’s products, the sexy marketing and luxe packaging definitely lure you in. Best of all, because her products aren’t cheap, they really work. You can use Wonderglow underneath your foundation or on its own. Either way it gives a dewy finish to your complexion and really does add radiance. This one is perfect for evenings and special occasions where you don’t need sun protection.
Eve Lom’s Flawless Primer SPF 30 works in so many ways. Forget the luxurious packaging if you can, and the price. This is a premium product and it’s absolutely worth it as you need very little and it lasts a long while. I particularly like this because not only does it do exactly what it says on the tin, evening out imperfections, boosting radiance and offering long lasting, anti-ageing benefits but it also protects from the sun. This is a real multi-tasker. The fact that it looks gorgeous on your skincare shelf is just an added bonus.
Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Protect SPF30. This is another of my all time favourites which not only primes your skin perfectly but protects from the sun. Wear it all the year round or through the brighter months. There are, as with all the ranges, other primers to pick from, including oil free, radiance enhancing and non SPF versions. Laura Mercier has one of the most popular ranges of primers available, and you’ll find them all here.
Estee Lauder Radiance Perfecting Primer adds instant brightness and radiance as well as adding extra hydrating benefits to your skin. There’s no SPF here but I particularly like this for the finish it gives to your foundation which lasts all day.
Smashbox has a foundation primer for every skin type and every occasion, from travel sized primers to the oil free, water based Primer Photo Finish Light which is perfect for sensitive skins. You’ll find the whole range here, including their Luminizing and Colour Correcting Primers and the ever popular original Photo Finish Primer.
Once you start using a foundation primer you’ll wonder how you managed before, with your makeup slipping off your face by lunchtime. When choosing bear in mind what you want your primer to do. I think you need at least two – one with radiance enhancing properties to add an extra glow in the evening or on days when you need it, and a second with SPF so you know you’re protected (to some degree) against the sun’s rays.
As always don’t think that makeup with SPF does the job of sun cream if you’re on the beach, it doesn’t. But if you’re out and about on a bright day it will certainly help protect your skin.
