I’ve never got on with the trench coat, no matter how ‘now’ it is at any given time. This is mainly because I think a coat, to give proper service, should not only look good and keep you dry but it also has to have a hood. In the UK at least you’re always going to be wearing it when it rains, and the worth of a raincoat without a hood has totally passed me by.
Most trench coats don’t have hoods and they’re designed to look modern rather than keep you dry. A very few will do both of those and will have the all essential hood. The alternative is a parka, which always looks much more casual and simply doesn’t do the same job as a trench being country rather than city driven.
These eight tick all of the boxes, with my two favourites being Burberry’s technical taffeta trench coat and Helly Hansen’s shorter, seriously technical trench version with a zip away hood and a flattering stand collar. Take your pick, but whatever you do stay dry this spring from top to bottom without having to resort to a brolly……..
