Karen Millen and the transitional capsule wardrobe

There’s a certain time of year, usually when the sale rails are packed in the stores and you are, quite frankly, tired of looking at anything too wintery, when appeal of something new and fresh becomes iressistible.

This happened to me yesterday when wandering around Nordstrom in Dallas and I spotted several tempting pieces I wanted to add straight into my wardrobe, to give it that je ne sais quoi – ‘spring must be around the corner’ – feeling.  Only these were things that I wouldn’t be able to wear for months.  So I resisted.

Which led me to consider what I should be buying now, to refresh my wardrobe and that I would be able to wear right now and on into spring and summer.  A capsule wardrobe of items that work pretty much at any time of year, depending on what I wore them with.

Karen Millen is one designer who always offers covetable clothes and accessories that you can wear right now and on.  You can put them together any way you want – but at this time of year buying pieces that work as a capsule wardrobe works the best.  You can’t go wrong with a soft tan leather jacket, cashmere slouchy sweater, tailored pants in a modern style or flattering trench in a colour pop shade.

At this time of year it’s easy to be tempted by the high season clothes that are beginning to appear.  But it’s much more enjoyable to invest in a wear now wear later update.  After all, there’s the perfect excuse to buy something now, and reason to refresh again later, unless you’re off to the Caribbean this weekend, of course, in which case, go for it…….
