This is the time when all the sequins are on show in the stores, from sequin jackets, coats and cardigans to shrugs, dresses, shoes, tops and more. The shimmer of a beautifully cut sequin jacket, worn intelligently, can be chic and modern. It can also be over the top, unflattering and blindingly in your face.
The answer is, of course, to keep things as simple as possible when wearing your sequin jacket or coat, and to invest in something good quality. At Christmas there are always far too many of the cheap and cheerful variety, combine that with making your sequins compete with something else you decide to wear and you have a potential disaster.
Wear your sequins with something beautifully simple underneath, from a long or short black dress for evening to black tailored or slim cropped pants and a simple top. Or your favourite jeans for that matter. After all you want your sequin jacket or coat to work for you, over and over again.
Where a sequin cardigan or shrug is concerned you can take it more casual, Jigsaw’s simple but stylish sequin cardigan above works perfectly with just about every little black dress, and over a white shirt and jeans. It sparkles in a subtle way and is a great essential piece. It’s also a very fine knit so you can wear it at night.
Episode’s Sequin Shrug, although shown with jeans on the website, is a shimmering addition to a strapless or sleeveless long or short evening dress (and looks much better with that as opposed to jeans). It has a chiffon contrast shawl collar and, unlike a ‘make do’ wrap or faux fur shrug, you can wear it glamorously all evening if you need to.
Velvet’s relaxed sequin shawl collar cardigan style jacket is better worn casually, making it interestingly different but maybe not quite so versatile as the others. And the Damsel in a Dress Black Sequin Jacket at the top is beaded on to silk. They describe it as unstructured, but it is probably, apart from the Oasis Sequin Coat, the most structured piece here.
Finally East Boutique’s Gold Sequin Jacket will make a statement whatever you wear it with. It’s also available in navy.
